Piercing Aftercare
Congratulations on your new piercing! Here are some aftercare guidelines to follow to ensure healthy a healthy healing process!
~● It is your responsibility to take care of your piercing once you have left the shop! ●~
Helpful Tips:
★ Always wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning your piercing.
★ Cleanse your piercing 2-3 times a day, especially after any activity that causes you to be sweaty or dirty, with sterile saline/wound wash/.
Do not mix your own saline. Pre-mixed sterile saline is available for purchase in shop, or over the counter at most drugstores.
★ Do not touch, twist, or play with your new piercing.
Twisting and moving the jewelry excessively can cause irritation & harm to your healing piercing, thus potentially extending the healing process.
★ Make sure you are getting good sleep and taking care of your body by eating nutritiously and consuming plenty of water!
★ Your new piercing might develop “crusties” around the jewelry.
This is totally normal!
Our bodies produce a substance called sebum, that comes from our skin to help heal wounds – which is what our bodies think a piercing is!
★ Do not attempt to pick at or scratch at these crusties to remove them. Instead, use your sterile saline to spray or soak crusties for removal.
The same result can be gained by running warm water over your piercing in the shower.
★ Do not use Qtips or cotton swabs to clean your piercing.
These are not sterile, and the fibers can get stuck on your jewelry, or even in your piercing.
★ Do not submerge your new piercing in any body of water, including but not limited to: pools, lakes, rivers, hot tubs, or bathtubs.
All above mentioned are huge infectious risks to a healing piercing and should be avoided during the healing process. If swimming is not possible without risk of contamination, please avoid during length of healing process.
★ You may shower as normal. However – avoid using highly fragranced soaps & shampoo near your healing piercing.
Many fragranced soaps and shampoos have a high alcohol content, which can be irritating to healing piercings.
★ Do not use a swim cap, or other alternative forms of covering your piercing.
Swim caps can put unnecessary pressure on piercings and can lead to irritation. There is no way to guarantee that a swim cap or adhesive covering will create an intact sterile barrier.
★ Avoid sleeping on your new piercing.
Applied pressure can irritate the piercing, or even cause it to shift placement.
★ Be careful when using or wearing fibrous materials (terry cloth, towels, sweaters, etc). These can catch on your new piercing – owch!
★ Use caution when combing or styling your hair, doing your makeup, wearing specific articles of clothing, or hanging out with your pets while you are getting used to your new piercing. These mundane tasks are often where ‘piercing oopses’ tend to happen the most
★ Avoid getting hair products, makeup, lotion, etc in or on your new piercing.
★ Be sure to change your bedding more frequently during the healing process.
★ It is normal for a healing piercing to experience some swelling, redness, and ‘crusties’.
